Lip Augmentation in North Carolina

Non-surgical lip augmentation procedures at the UNC Aesthetic, Laser & Burn Center in Chapel Hill are an effective treatment for lip wrinkles, lip lines and small lips. With an injectable filler, the lips can be augmented and rejuvenated for a more youthful appearance.

What Is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation procedures can be used to enhance the shape of your lips and increase their volume, creating fuller-looking lips with more kissable area. Rather than an implant, injectable fillers such as Juvederm® and Radiesse® can be used to augment the lips. Juvederm® is often used to create fuller lips, while Radiesse® can greatly diminish wrinkles around the lips and mouth.

Who Can Benefit?

Injectable lip augmentation procedures can treat many issues, such as:

  • Thin lips
  • Flat lips
  • Small lips
  • Drooping lips
  • Wrinkles around the mouth
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Loss of fullness
  • Marionette lines
  • Drooping oral commissures
  • Laugh lines
  • Lipstick lines

Ideal patients should have realistic expectations of the results.

Some individuals may not be ideal for lip augmentation including those with cold sores, dental abscesses or skin eruptions such as cysts, pimples or rashes.

The Lip Augmentation Procedure

Your lips consist of skin and mucosa; the area between these two is called the vermillion border and the natural arches of your lips are called the Cupid’s bow. Two parts of your lip can be injected – the white roll where the lip meets the skin under your nose and the red line where the dry and wet parts of your lips meet.

Your surgeon will use a dental or nerve block to manage pain. Using the appropriately sized needle and a special technique, the filler will be injected evenly into the appropriate area of your lip. The intent of your plastic surgeon is to preserve the natural borders and appearance of your lip. After injection, the material may be massaged to ensure proper contour and to avoid lumps.

Lip Augmentation Aftercare

Following your lip augmentation treatment, you may experience mild discomfort and swelling for a few hours, and you may have some bruising for up to a week. After 2-3 days, you should be able to see the final results, which can last 3-6 months.
