With time, many women will struggle with sagging breasts brought on by age or weight loss. Breast lift surgery performed by our surgeons at the UNC Aesthetic, Laser & Burn Center in Chapel Hill can help to restore youth and volume to the breasts for a more feminine silhouette and a renewed level of self-confidence.
A breast lift can be performed to correct the following issues:
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy procedure, is the only way to significantly lift sagging breasts because it solves the issue of lost skin elasticity. Not only can a breast lift improve the position of the breasts, but the nipple and areola can also be elevated and resized. For women who are also experiencing a loss of volume or wish to enhance the size of their breasts, we can perform your breast lift together with breast augmentation surgery.
Using a combination of skin and tissue tightening techniques, your UNC plastic surgeon is able to reduce excess skin around your breast and bring it to a more youthful position.
Women who are healthy, non-smokers may be good candidates for a breast lift in North Carolina to correct drooping breasts. If you plan on having more children, your plastic surgeon may advise you to delay your breast lift to avoid changes resulting from pregnancy. This surgery can aid those who deal with a mild to severe drooping of the breast (when the nipple is at the lowest point on the breast).
During your consultation, your surgeon will describe several possible incision sites/techniques in detail. Possible breast lift incision types include:
The choice of breast lift technique depends on how much correction is needed. These details will be discussed at length during your consultation so that you know what to expect from your procedure.
Before beginning your outpatient breast lift surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia. On rare occasions, a local anesthetic with sedation may be used. After your plastic surgeon has made the chosen incision, excess tissue will be removed or reshaped and skin will be tightened in order to gently elevate the breast. If necessary, the nipple and areola will also be moved to a more appropriate position. When complete, your plastic surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and cover them with gauze.
Following a breast lift, it is not uncommon to experience some bruising, swelling or discomfort. Your surgeon may prescribe medication to manage pain if you so choose. Your recovery will last 1-2 weeks; however, you will be required to wear a special compression bra to aid in healing for up to a month. You should also limit your activity for up to six weeks for the best results and minimal discomfort.
As you heal, you will notice a new youthful perkiness of your breasts.
