Plastic Surgery: What’s Trending in 2017

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their yearly statistics for 2016. It seems there is no stopping plastic surgery! Just last year, nearly 2 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed.

The Breasts Take the Top Spot

Not too surprising, breast enhancement continues to be a patient favorite. Breast augmentation topped the list yet again, with over 290,000 women choosing to enhance their breasts with breast implants. Of those, 84 percent of women opted for silicone over saline as the implant filler. While not in the top five, breast lift surgery (mastopexy) has seen a continual rise, with a two percent increase in the last year, and 92 percent since year 2000.

Rise of Body Contouring

More and more, people are looking to refine and shape their bodies. Always popular, tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) just missed the top five this year. However, when it comes to body contouring, the most notable procedures include the lower body lift and the upper arm lift (brachioplasty)—showing tremendous growth in the past 16 years, the two body-shaping procedures have seen an increase of 5,358 percent and 5,184 percent respectively.

The Year of the Buttocks

It would seem the backside has it—as all forms of buttock enhancement skyrocketed in popularity. The Brazilian Butt Lift, which augments the buttock through fat grafting, saw a one-year increase of a remarkable 26 percent. Likewise, traditional gluteal enhancement surgery using an implant, saw an 18 percent increase over 2015. Fifteen year statistics are unavailable for each of these as they are both relatively new to the field. However, highlighting the growing trend for a more bodacious backside, the buttock lift has seen a 213 percent increase since the year 2000.
