The Many Benefits of Tumescent Liposuction
Many men and women hope to improve their body’s contour by eliminating pockets of excess fat. For years now, liposuction has done just this—and has successfully helped patients achieve their desired figure. With continuous advancements and an ever-growing number of variations of liposuction techniques, it can be difficult for patients to know which technique is the right choice for them. At our Chapel Hill practice, we use the tumescent liposuction technique. Proven safe and effective, tumescent liposuction can garner beautiful results.
What is Tumescent Liposuction?
When first performed in the 1970’s, liposuction used a “dry” technique—meaning that fat cells were removed by suction alone. Come the late 1980’s, a new technique, “wet” liposuction, was performed. Now known as tumescent liposuction, this technique involves injecting a solution into the treatment area prior to any suctioning. Specially formulated, this solution contains a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine, causes the fat cells to harden. The solution helps to break up fat cells and makes it easier for your surgeon to identify and extract the fatty cells.
Why Choose Tumescent Liposuction?
Having proven itself to have a number of benefis, tumescent liposuction is often considered the “gold standard” of liposuction. A few of the benefits include: Less Blood Loss The addition of epinephrine causes blood vessels to constrict and results in very little blood loss. Approximately losing only 15 to 30ml (one to two tablespoons) of blood—the blood loss is comparable to the amount taken for routine laboratory exams. Comfortable Treatment and Recovery With the addition of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, tumescent liposuction provides a relatively comfortable treatment for patients without the need for general anesthesia. Vasoconstriction, a lingering benefit of epinephrine, allows for lidocaine to remain active for up to 36 hours—thus making the early stages of recovery more comfortable for patients. Predictable and Consistent Results Tumescent liposuction has the advantage that a small microcannula can be used. The use of a smaller cannula slows the suctioning and thus minimizes the chance of irregular fat removal. This allows for smooth, even, and beautiful results. Minimal Complications Because it is a gentler treatment, recovery from tumescent liposuction is swift, and the healing process is relatively easy. Residual side effects, such as bruising and scarring, are minimal.
