WHY PATIENTS ARE STILL LOSING WEIGHT AFTER THEIR TUMMY TUCKS

It is not to be confused as a fat reducing procedure, however, the popular body contouring surgery, abdominoplasty – or the tummy tuck as you may know it – has been linked to continued weight loss after surgery. The ASPS published a study earlier this year linking the tummy tuck surgery to an increase in a person’s satiety – the measure of how full a person feels after consuming a given amount of food. The majority of past tummy tuck patients that participated in the study were reporting that they were feeling fuller faster while also eating smaller meals.

Why the weight kept coming off after the procedure

The study showed that those who had more fat removed during their tummy tuck – sometimes via liposuction procedure – continued to lose weight after their surgery. Fat tissue is believed to contain a hormone that can cause increased appetite, so when this fat is removed, patients often feel less hungry than before. Therefore, the more fat tissue removed, the more likely a patient is to continue healthy weight management moving forward. While the findings of this new study will likely encourage more people to seek out a tummy tuck, there are several different body contouring procedures available, so it is important to know which is right for you. The tummy tuck may help patients keep the weight off after their procedure, but it is not designed to reduce the fat on its own.
