Sculptra Aesthetic® in NC

Sculptra Aesthetic® is an injectable, long-lasting polymer filler made by Sanofi-aventis that is used to address contour defects of the facial skin. The product is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is biocompatible.

The tiny PLLA particles encourage the natural process of collagen growth in the skin by stimulating fibroblasts, or cells found in connective tissue. Increased collagen growth means increased volume, an effect that makes Sculptra® a popular solution for wrinkles and sunken cheeks. Keep in mind, however, that this volume increase occurs gradually over the course of the weeks following treatment.

Originally, Sculptra® was used to treat facial lipoatrophy, or the localized loss of fat tissue also known as facial wasting, a condition often associated with HIV. With the approval of the FDA in 2009, use of the product began in cosmetic procedures.

Who Can Benefit?

Because of its versatility, Sculptra® is used to treat a number of different conditions, although the most common is to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. Individuals who suffer from premature aging, lines and wrinkles may find the solution they are looking for with Sculptra®.

Sculptra® can be used to treat the following issues:

  • Sunken cheeks and temples
  • Facial lipoatrophy
  • Nasal labial folds

The Sculptra® Procedure

The Sculptra® injection procedure takes little of your time and is conducted in the relaxed setting your plastic surgeon’s office. Once your surgeon has carefully marked the points of injection, he or she will inject Sculptra® with a fine needle using a special cross-hatch injection technique.

It is best to take a conservative approach for the first treatment as Sculptra® results are naturally delayed. Therefore, an additional treatment can be planned after you and your surgeon have assessed the results of the first treatment, approximately four weeks later.

Sculptra® Aftercare

You may notice new improvements for up to one year following treatment with Sculptra®. These changes may last up to two years, although this is not true for every individual.

Side effects are uncommon with Sculptra®. You may experience mild bruising and swelling as a result of injection, symptoms that can be treated with ice or pain medication. If you notice lumps, bumps, bleeding, or other side effects that concern you, contact your plastic surgeon.
