Men who struggle with excess breast fat and breast tissue often turn to our plastic surgeons in Chapel Hill at the UNC Aesthetic, Laser & Burn Center to help them realize a more masculine silhouette through male breast reduction.
Male breast reduction surgery, which is used to correct and remove breast tissue on the male chest, combines skin and tissue tightening techniques to create a flatter chest. It is used not only to streamline the male chest, but also to correct tender tissue on the chest as well as alleviate embarrassment that may come with the excess breast tissue.
The surgery can greatly benefit men who suffer from gynecomastia, which is thought to be a hormonal imbalance that results in a surplus growth of male breast tissue. If lifestyle changes (often under the guidance of a physician) cannot correct the problem, surgery may be the best option. Adolescents–as well as adults who are at a stable body weight–and non-smokers may undergo a male breast reduction in North Carolina with the plastic surgery team at UNC.
The male breast reduction surgery takes at least an hour to complete, and the amount of tissue to be removed will dictate whether local or general anesthesia will be necessary. If only glandular tissue is to be removed, a scalpel alone may be used. If fat also needs to be removed, incisions will be made in the underarm or around the nipple, and, through these incisions, the excess fat will be removed through liposuction.
Your plastic surgeon will have specific guidelines for your recovery. Your chest will be wrapped in gauze and the stitches will be removed after about a week. You may return to work after a week, but exercise should be avoided for up to a month. After three months, you should be able to see the final result, which is permanent, provided a healthy lifestyle is maintained.
Possible complications may include scarring, pigment changes, infection, skin injury and asymmetry.
