"I do my work because I love it and want to do what's best for people. It's that simple." Dr. Lynn Damitz

Lynn Damitz M.D. is Associate Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at UNC and Director of Aesthetic Surgery.

Specialties

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Lynn Damitz of UNC specializes in aesthetic surgery of the face and body. She also offers expertise in breast and oncologic reconstruction, general reconstructive surgery of the face and body and facial trauma reconstruction.

"People want to look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside."

Patients tell Dr. Damitz that they look in the mirror and say to themselves, "I don't recognize that older person." They have lost their self-esteem and confidence and look to Dr. Damitz to restore their breasts . . . or rejuvenate their face . . . or contour their body.

Sometimes the answer is surgery but often she uses state-of-the-art fillers and other procedures to make patients look and feel younger, fresher . . . and more like themselves.

"Success comes from connecting with the patient as a person and understanding them."

She often sees a patient several times both before and after the procedure.

Before the procedure, she wants to "get into their heads" to know exactly what they're looking for and to make sure they understand the benefits . . . and the risks of the procedure. And she follows up afterwards to make sure things are going well and to make sure patients know that she's there to support them the whole way through.

"A woman's temperament is perfect for my kind of work."

Being positive, encouraging and nurturing helps Dr. Damitz reduce fears and give patients a real sense of comfort and confidence. It's important to be detail-oriented and combine professionalism with the highest degree of patient care. She says "This is a vulnerable time for many patients. It's the unknown. I'm there for them."

"I offer surgical as well as minimally non-invasive procedures."

Dr. Damitz specializes in breast and aesthetic surgery such as facelift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, breast augmentation and or lift, abdominoplasty, liposuction, calf augmentation, scar revision, etc. She also offers non-invasive procedures such as Botox®, fillers, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing.

"I use a very individualized approach."

She says, "I make sure the patient and I are envisioning the same results. Everyone is different – different body types and different goals." What she does for any one person is going to be unique to that patient. Dr. Damitz also considers each patient's lifestyle and how she dresses. What style of bathing suit does she wear? Low rise or high rise jeans? Does she wear v-necks or low necklines?

By understanding these subtle differences, she can conduct the surgery to make sure the scar is not going to be visible.

"It's important to be able to think three-dimensionally and look at everyone as a blank tablet."

A great deal of artistry goes into this kind of work. She has to be able to project and see in her mind's eye what she can achieve. And then, of course, she needs the skill she has developed over her career to turn that vision into reality. Her reward is when patients say, "You've changed my life. I feel so much more confident."

"Occasionally I have to turn down a patient."

Sometimes Dr. Damitz has to make a hard decision. If she feels this is not a good time for a patient's surgery – that they need to stop smoking for a period of time . . . or gain or lose weight before their procedure – she is honest with her opinion. She says, "My patient's health is foremost. I have to be willing to say no."

"I knew I wanted to be a physician since sixth grade."

Dr. Damitz started out just wanting to do research for a cousin who had cystic fibrosis. That turned into a lifelong dream of helping others. That dream has come true. Dr. Damitz is originally from New Jersey but enjoyed many areas of the country prior to settling down in North Carolina.

She spends vacations with her husband, brother, his wife and their seven children. She's an avid Notre Dame fan who loves music, travel, the movies, and gathering with friends.

"My education took me from Indiana to Philadelphia to North Carolina."

Education

Dr. Damitz completed a fellowship in general plastic surgery with Charlotte Plastic Surgery, and a breast and aesthetic surgery fellowship with Nashville Plastic Surgery. She completed both a plastic surgery residency and a general surgery residency at UNC Chapel Hill. Her Medical Doctorate (M.D.) is from Hanemann University School of Medicine.
