Juvederm® Injectable Gel NC

Men and women who exhibit wrinkles or a loss of facial volume can benefit from injections of Juvederm® injectable filler, a treatment offered by UNC plastic surgeons at the UNC Burn Reconstruction & Aesthetic Center in Chapel Hill.

What is Juvederm®?

Used to add structure and volume to skin, Juvederm® is a biodegradable but long-lasting injectable filler. It is colorless and contains hyaluronic acid gel similar to the hyaluronic acid found in your body. Hyaluronic acid works to deliver nutrients to the skin, hydrates it and acts as a cushioning agent.

Juvederm®, which is made by Allergan, is available in different formulations and strengths, depending on the site to be treated.

Who Can Benefit?

The FDA has approved Juvederm® to treat moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. It is commonly used to fill deep nasolabial folds, but may additionally be used to treat marionette lines, fine lines, and hollow tear through. Facial contouring and lip augmentation patients may also benefit from the use of Juvederm®.

The Juvederm® Treatment

Before your plastic surgeon begins the procedure, your skin will be cleansed with an antiseptic. After choosing the proper injection site, the Juvederm® solution will be injected below the dermis using a special technique.

Under the dermis, the Juvederm® combines with your skin's hyaluronic acid and binds to water. A hand massage may be used to perfectly place the product under your skin. Juvederm® contains lidocaine, but an additional topical anesthetic may be used to control pain.

Juvederm® Aftercare

Following your Juvederm® treatment, the injection site may feel overly full. Within the first 24 hours, you should avoid strenuous exercise, sun and heat exposure and alcohol, as these activities may cause or exacerbate side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site. An ice pack may be applied over the treatment site to calm any swelling.

Although minor touch-ups may be required, the results of your Juvederm® treatment should last 6-12 months.

Possible side effects of the Juvederm® treatment, which are often mild to moderate and short lasting, may include redness, pain or tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps or bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration. Infection at the injection site is also possible.
