“It is a privilege to do what I do.”
Dr. C. Scott Hultman
When you talk with Dr. Hultman, you can feel the passion for his work. It’s tangible. His extraordinary life and clear focus are inspiring. He started medical school only knowing that medicine was his calling.
But what specialty would he pursue? Where would his heart take him? After pursuing a variety of specialties, he found himself on a surgical team and then in a burn lab . . . and that’s where Dr. Hultman discovered what was to become the focus of his life’s work: reconstructive and aesthetic services for burn patients.
As Chief of Plastic Surgery at the University of North Carolina and Associate Director for NC Jaycee Burn Center, Dr. Hultman has become a recognized leader in his field.
“I tell my burn patients – ‘I’ll be here.”
As he explains, a relationship with a burn patient is a long one . . .”longitudinal” as he calls it. In many cases, multiple procedures are required and so, the relationship between doctor and patient goes well beyond just good medicine. He provides emotional support and guidance, too, as his many burn patients go through a very challenging journey toward recovery. In addition to restoring his patients’ appearance and self-confidence, he is often called in on the day of injury, when his skill saves the lives of both children and adults.
“I never stop searching for new answers.”
Dr. Hultman is an avid researcher. Tissue engineering (growing new skin), immunology research (the effect of burn injury on the immune system) and wound healing (to minimize scar formation) are three areas that he studies. Dr. Hultman works with experts in the field to find the newest solutions to the complex problems burn patients face. He employs the latest laser technology, non-invasive procedures, and surgical procedures.
“Having a procedural center right on site is a huge benefit.”
The practice uses safe, accredited procedure rooms, which means that his group can be more efficient and keep the costs down for patients. The office layout, the staff – everything has been designed to make the patient experience the best it can be.
“I’m so fortunate to have the family I do.”
Dr. Hultman, his wife, and their three children all pursue a wide variety of sports and activities, but they also spend a good deal of their time supporting a charity called Mission 1:27, which works to improve the lives of Russian orphans. The family’s church has adopted an entire orphanage, and the Hultman family sponsors four children.
The group provides educational and social resources for more than 100 special-needs children who, as Dr. Hultman explains, are never adopted and are sent on their own after ninth grade with nothing more than a tea pot and a blanket. The Hultman family travels to Russia once a year and to help build a recreation center for recent graduates, which will serve as a home base as these teenagers develop a trade and become self-sufficient.
“My education lasted longer than most surgeons because I was interested in a very focused area of work.”
