While many women undergo surgery to increase their breast size, others suffer from neck and back pain because their breasts are too large. For these women, breast reduction surgery in North Carolina may offer a welcome option.
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that is performed to reduce the size of overly large breasts. Also referred to as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction involves the surgical removal of fat, skin, and glandular tissue. The breasts are also lifted or reshaped, and the size of the areola is reduced during the operation.
Women who are afflicted by large, pendulous breasts can benefit from breast reduction. These individuals may have pain or discomfort in the shoulders, back, or neck, and may experience shoulder grooving and skin infections as a result of the weight of their breasts. Many women who seek breast reduction surgery are also self-conscious about their chest size and body shape.
Breast reduction surgery is performed using general anesthesia. In order to access the breast tissue, the plastic surgeon makes an incision, shaped like an inverted T, that encircles the areola and extends down to the breast crease. The skin, fat, and glandular tissue can then be removed by surgical excision. A breast reduction often includesliposuction for fat removal.
During surgery, the areola is also reshaped, and the breasts are lifted to a more youthful-looking position on the chest. The surgeon then closes the incisions and applies gauze and tape to keep the area clean.
You can expect some aching, swelling, and bruising for the first days after breast reduction surgery. These symptoms that can be managed with pain medications prescribed by your plastic surgeon. Don’t be alarmed if you experience some mild numbness in your nipples or breast skin at this time as it is often an expected consequence of swelling. During the 1-2 week recovery, you will be advised to wear a surgical bra that will provide needed support.
