Botox Cosmetic®

While many injectable treatments for facial wrinkles have arrived on the scene in recent years, the most popular continues to be Botox Cosmetic®. At the UNC Burn Reconstruction & Aesthetic Center in Chapel Hill, our board-certified plastic surgeons offer Botox® treatments to patients to treat wrinkles as well as some other issues.

What is Botox®?

Botox Cosmetic® is the brand name of the purified botulinum toxin used for cosmetic purposes. When injected into the skin, it can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles in many areas of the face. It may also be used to treat muscle spasms and excessive sweating. Because of its varied uses and success stories, Botox Cosmetic® has grown to be used in more than 70 countries and more than five million treatments were performed in 2010, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Who Can Benefit?

Individuals between the ages of 18-65 can benefit from the use of Botox®. In addition to the therapeutic uses listed above, Botox® is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles such as glabellar lines or frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. Individuals who may have a hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation should not use Botox®.

The Botox® Procedure

When your plastic surgeon begins the Botox® treatment, he/she will carefully choose the points of injection. An effective amount of the Botox® solution will be injected into the site. For areas with a larger muscle mass, a larger dose will be necessary. The Botox® injection will decrease contraction of the muscle, allowing the wrinkle to smooth out. As the Botox® treatment is virtually painless, a topical anesthetic is not necessary, but is an option for some patients. The total treatment time for most Botox® procedures is about 15 minutes.

Botox® Aftercare

After your plastic surgeon has completed your Botox® treatment, you should expect no downtime, but he/she will have some instructions for you. You should remain upright for six hours following treatment and also avoid alcohol. After 4-8 days following your treatment, you should see the effects of the Botox® become fully apparent; these results will last anywhere from 4 to 6 months.

Some side effects from Botox® are possible and you should notify your plastic surgeon if you experience difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing. Other possible side effects may include redness, bruising or stinging at the injection site, nausea, fatigue or flu-like symptoms.
