3 Tips to Ensure Tummy Tuck Success

One of the most common concerns for both men and women is that their stomach is no longer as tight, toned, or sculpted as it once was. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, can help. Ideal for those looking to give their stomachs a youthful and firm appearance, a tummy tuck targets loose and excess skin around the abdominals.

As one of our most popular procedures at UNC Burn Reconstruction and Aesthetic Center, the tummy tuck garners many questions. Here, we provide you with three ways to ensure the best results from your tummy tuck.

What can you do to ensure the best results from your tummy tuck?

Go Into Your Tummy Tuck with a Healthy Mindset

It is just as important to prepare emotionally as it is physically. Sometimes overlooked, it is necessary to go into your surgery with a healthy mindset. We find that best results are seen when one is in good health, maintains a positive attitude, and has realistic expectations.

Be Close to Your Target Weight

Although a tummy tuck will slim your waistline, it is not to be used as a weight loss tool. Whether you have gained weight during pregnancy, have recently undergone major weight loss surgery, or are finding that with age your weight has increased—being at the end of your weight loss goal is important. In fact, being as close as possible to your desired weight will ensure optimal results as it allows your surgeon to remove more excess skin from your midsection.

From your initial consultation onwards, our dedicated team will work with you and can even provide you with expert tips on how to lose those last few pounds. When it comes to your tummy tuck, it is worth being patient and waiting until you have achieved your goal weight.

Allow Your Body Time to Heal

It is important that you give your body time to heal and recover. Keep in mind that your body has undergone serious changes both internally and externally and that it will take time for your body to adapt.

Following your tummy tuck, you can expect to be sore for the first several days—especially when standing or walking around. We suggest that you keep physical activity to a minimum for up to one week. Often, you will be provided with a compression garment to help minimize swelling. Most of our patients find that they fully recover within four to six weeks.

At UNC Burn Reconstruction and Aesthetic Center, we understand the importance and significance a tummy tuck can have. We are excited to work with you and give you the taut tummy you have been working towards.
